ANTIOCH — A pedestrian who walked into traffic on an East Bay highway died after being hit by two vehicles, the California Highway Patrol said.
The collisions happened Wednesday night about 7:35 p.m. on eastbound state Highway 4 west of the Somersville Road exit.
Authorities said they would identify the person following the notification of family.
The man was the fifth person to die in the four fatal crashes on Highway 4 this year.
In a statement, the CHP said a man entered the lanes from the right shoulder of the highway. He made it to the far left lane where an oncoming Ford van hit him. The van’s impact caused the pedestrian to fall into the far left lane and and a Subaru Forester directly behind the Ford also hit him, the CHP said.
The first collision appeared unavoidable because the man walked directly in front of the Ford, according to the CHP. He died at the scene despite rescue attempts by paramedics and CHP officers.
The collisions shut down all lanes of the highway for nearly 30 minutes.
