Thirty years past his high-profile bankruptcy and living the more modest life in Tracy, MC Hammer faces a new financial blip: He’s being sued for allegedly failing to make payments on a $100,000 Land Rover.
The baggy-pantsed ’80s rap star — born Stanley Burrell in Oakland — bought the SUV two years ago from a Livermore dealership on a plan calling for 60 monthly payments of $2,434, according to the complaint filed last week by JPMorgan Chase Bank in San Joaquin County Superior Court. The filing was first reported by Courthouse News Service.
After Hammer, 63, missed multiple payments, the bank “demanded possession of the Vehicle from Defendants. Defendants have not surrendered the Vehicle,” the complaint says.
The contract lists the buyers as MC Hammer and U Can’t Touch This LLC, both at the same Tracy address.
At the height of his stardom, Hammer bought a mansion on 12 acres in the Fremont hills and reportedly spent millions on improvements including a recording studio and two swimming pools. He was forced to sell it at a loss after he declared bankruptcy in 1996, and he and his family moved to a three-bedroom home in Tracy.
A recent Google Streetview image of the Tracy property shows six vehicles in the driveway, including a Land Rover Defender in the color known as Grasmere green.
